2009 & 2010 weddings

I try to post periodic updates on my wedding scheduling and realized that I haven’t done so recently, so here you go.

In 2009, I will be accepting 2 more weddings before I hit my personal “limit”.  For weddings, I am booked full for the months of July, September, October, December.  I can not accept any weddings in those months.  Unlike some other years, Spring/Summer 2009 is actually my least hectic season whereas fall/early winter is off the charts crazy.

I am now booking weddings for 2010.  I’ve also had inquiries for 2011 and will consider booking 2011 dates on a couple by couple basis.  I don’t usually book weddings that far in advance, but will consider making exceptions for really fun people.:)

My wedding pricing will remain the same through December.  On January 1, my pricing for 09/10 will go into effect but any bookings made before the end of 2008 will be locked in at my current rates.  So if you’re ready to book and you’d like to save some money, please contact me before the end of December.

My theory on family photos

When I first started my business, the last types of photos I wanted to shoot were family portraits.  We’ve all seen the cookie cutter images churned out by Sears or Wal Mart.  Heck, the only “professional” photos my grandparents ever had taken were Olan Mills portraits, shot in the church basement.  I think both sets of grandparents have the exact same pose even though they were taken years apart by different photographers in different church basements.

Don’t get me wrong, these photos are good.  They’re perfectly lit, perfectly posed, perfectly composed, etc.  Every wrist bend and head tilt and smile is perfect.  But people aren’t perfect, which is why creating some illusion of perfection in their portraits just seems so fake to me.  It reminds me so much of Richard Avedon’s essay “Borrowed Dogs” in which he discusses his own “family photos”.  It’s the attitude that Avedon mentions that made me want to avoid shooting family portraits at all costs.

But things have evolved over the past year and I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some amazing families who don’t want fake photos.  Sure, we still do a couple “everyone look at the camera and smile” photos (and I have some below), but I want the people in the photos to feel comfortable and to be themselves.  I love laughter and silliness and genuine happiness.  I love working with families when they can be natural in front of the camera and have fun during the shoot.

Jill’s family photos

Yesterday I had the chance to work with an incredible family from Johnstown.  We had a tremendous amount of fun during the hour shoot and I just love the photos we created.  And even if we couldn’t pull off the “jump shot” with the junior ballerinas, I think the resulting images are special in their own way. :)

Many thanks to Jill & her family for being so awesome to work with!

My friend was on Criminal Minds!

A few months ago my good friend John Karyus called to tell me that he had just been on the hit CBS drama “Criminal Minds”.  Well, the episode finally aired last night and I took some snapshots of his scenes.  John is an awesome character actor (if you like Troma stuff, check him out on Poultrygiest!) and I’m so happy to see him getting steady work in L.A.

My phone isn’t working

Earlier in the week I had to have Verizon make some changes to my voicemail service and I just learned today that my phone isn’t working.  I can make calls, but I can’t receive them.  Supposedly, Verizon will fix this tomorrow, but as they’re pretty much completely incompetent (seriously, how can they screw up voicemail?!?!), I’m not holding my breath.  This especially annoys me because I had a trip planned to DC this weekend but I can’t leave if the phone isn’t working.  Thanks, Verizon, for being such incredible losers.

Anyway, if you need me, email me.
